25th Anniversary of Nation's First Coronary Angioplasty at Lenox Hill Hospital To Be Celebrated at Special Ceremony

Lenox Hill Hospital will mark the anniversary of the nation's first coronary angioplasty, which was performed at Lenox Hill Hospital in 1978, with two events on Friday, April 11, 2003 in the hospital's Einhorn Auditorium.
From 8:00 to 10:30am a panel discussion, "Transforming Events in Interventional Cardiology" will be held with guest speaker Simon Stertzer, MD, who performed the nation's first angioplasty in 1978 at Lenox Hill Hospital. The panel discussion will be moderated by Jeffrey Moses, MD, Chief, Interventional Cardiology. Featured speakers include: Antonio Colombo, MD, Martin B. Leon, MD, Gary S. Roubin, MD, PhD and Paul Teirstein, MD.
At 12:00 noon, Drs. Stertzer, Nicholas Depasquale, Michael Bruno and members of the original team will share their recollections of this event, which revolutionized cardiac care. Dr. Jeffrey Moses will update the audience on the newest interventional cardiology techniques developed at Lenox Hill Hospital, which are used throughout the world today.
In the years since the first coronary angioplasty in the nation was performed at Lenox Hill Hospital, its physicians and surgeons have continued in the vanguard of cardiovascular research and clinical care. In 1991, Lenox Hill Hospital cardiologists were the first in New York to use coronary stents; in 1994, its cardiac surgeons performed the first minimally invasive coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB), and in 2001, Lenox Hill was the first hospital to use drug-eluting stents, as part of a national, multicenter clinical trial.
Last September, Lenox Hill interventional cardiologists Jeffrey Moses, MD and Martin Leon, MD released the study results that confirmed that drug-eluting stents could prevent blockages from recurring in patients with coronary artery lesions.
