Dr. Wilentz graduated AOA from the NYU School of Medicine after receiving his BA in English from Columbia University. After his Interventional fellowship with Dr. Gruentzig, in 1986 he became Associate Chief of the Cath Lab at Lenox Hill. From 1993 through 2005 he directed the Interventional Cardiology Labs at Beth Israel and St. Luke's Roosevelt, and returned to Lenox Hill this year. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association's Council on Clinical Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention. He has appeared as a panelist in the ACC's video learning series on acute intervention in MI and has been a preceptor for physicians learning carotid intervention both in the cath lab and using the simulator.
Dr. Wilentz' expertise in complex coronary interventions including rotoblator, bifurcational and left main stenting and reopening of chronic total occlusions dates from his early training with Dr. Gruentzig, the father of coronary angioplasty. Dr. Wilentz did his peripheral vascular and carotid training with the team of Max Amor in Nancy, France, and with Drs. Roubin and Iyer at Lenox Hill. He is widely published and has been an investigator in new devices for carotid stenting with distal protection, outpatient coronary stenting, invasive follow-up of congenital heart disease, ASD / PFO closure and invasive treatment of peripheral and renovascular disease.
Dr. Wilentz does evaluation of patients with complex cardiac and vascular disease, including stroke prevention and relief of heart pains and claudication (exercise-related calf pain or heaviness). He is known for his acceptance of patients who have been told there is "nothing that can be done." He performs complex coronary procedures, carotid stenting, renal artery stenting, as well as peripheral vascular atherectomy and stenting and catheter repair of PFO and ASD.
